Update: April 2008
On April 2 2007, Gizo and many islands in the region suffered from an earthquake registering 8.1 followed by quakes and aftershocks for more than 2 weeks. A Tsunami of about 3-4 meters followed the big earthquake and damaged or destroyed many homes on the coastal villages. Sadly, 52 lives were lost. This
Within 48hrs, businesses in Gizo township including the Gizo Hotel, Phoebes Resthouse and other accommodations were back in service and Dive Gizo was open for business. Within 5 days the water was looking clear.
Its been a long slow struggle but life goes on and divers again are enjoying the marvellous marine life living on our reefs, whilst enjoying the company of the friendly locals.
Following the earthquake, two of our favourite reefs damaged by the shock waves have remained GREAT fish dives and we are very pleased to say their is plenty of signs of regrowth of many varieties of coral. Many sites had little damage as you go east from Ghizo Island, which means the quality of diving continues it's high standard.
We welcome our divers from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Japan and Europe . MMan
